About LBrowser: Navigate Freely

Meet LBrowser (Little Browser) – a compact, open-source browser built with a singular focus: empowering you to explore the web safely and without surveillance. Like a small sailboat ready for adventure, LBrowser helps you navigate the vast online ocean, promising a lighter, more personal journey.

But exploration isn't just about the surface. LBrowser is designed to help you Go Further! With integrated Docker container support, you can effortlessly access alternative networks like Tor, I2P, Zeronet, and Hyphanet. This capability, perhaps represented by our submarine logo, allows you to delve into different layers of the web, unlocking new possibilities with a simple click (Docker needs to be running on your system to enable these modes).

Crucially, LBrowser respects your privacy above all else. Unlike large, data-hungry browsers that track your every move, we have no interest in your data. Built on the open-source Chromium rendering engine via an isolated webview, LBrowser fundamentally differs by promising never to sell, store, or track your Browse activity – ever.

This project is built and maintained by me, in my free time, driven by the belief in a more open and private web for everyone.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • What is LBrowser?

LBrowser (Little Browser) is a free, open-source, lightweight web browser focused on user privacy and making it easy to access various web networks like the standard web, Tor, I2P, Zeronet, and Hyphanet via integrated Docker container modes. It does not track, store, or sell your data.

  • Why LBrowser? (And what about the search bar?)

LBrowser exists because I believe in an open web where everyone can explore without restrictions. While many browsers increasingly focus on identifying users and leveraging their data, LBrowser aims to simply facilitate your ability to find what you're looking for, wherever it is. What you explore is your business, not the browser's. This is why LBrowser prioritizes easy integration with censorship-resistant networks via Docker. Adhering to this philosophy, LBrowser does not have a default search engine tied to the address bar – entering text there will not automatically perform a search. While it opens on Startpage, this is just a starting point, not a forced default search provider. While we champion web freedom, we are not complicit in or promoters of any activity that harms others or involves illicit data practices. An open web requires responsible consumption and promotion. Ultimately, I am not responsible for the use you make of the browser; that is always your own matter.

  • How does LBrowser protect my privacy?

Privacy is a core principle. LBrowser does not collect or sell user data. It includes built-in features like an ad blocker. When using network modes like Tor or I2P, your connection is routed through those networks for anonymity. The Docker images used are curated and being reviewed for maximum security.

  • How do the "web modes" for Tor, I2P, etc. work?

LBrowser integrates with Docker containers to provide easy access to these networks. When you enable a mode (e.g., Tor Mode), LBrowser uses a pre-configured Docker image to route your Browse through that network. You need to have Docker installed and running on your system, but LBrowser handles the specific container setup for each mode.

  • Do I need Docker to use LBrowser?

To utilize the special "web modes" for networks like Tor, I2P, Zeronet, or Hyphanet, you will need to have Docker installed and running on your system. The core functionality of LBrowser as a standard privacy-focused browser will work without Docker, but the unique network modes are dependent on it.

  • How does the built-in ad-free mode work?

The integrated ad-free mode in LBrowser works by consulting public databases of known ad spaces. It then simply hides the visual elements on the page that are dedicated to displaying advertisements. This means the site still serves the ad request (they don't lose potential revenue), but you simply don't see it. This method respects HTTP requests and avoids interfering with the underlying site communication, ensuring your Browse activity and the sites you visit are not directly tracked or altered by the ad-blocking process itself.

  • What is LBrowser's business model?

LBrowser is an independent, open-source project with no traditional business model. It is sustained solely by voluntary donations and community-sponsored feature "commissions" via Ko-fi. The core philosophy of this project dictates that we will never sell, share, or use your data for training AI models or any other purpose. Your privacy is paramount and not a commodity. LBrowser uses the open-source Chromium rendering engine in an isolated manner, and we continuously work to control any tracking or unintentional information transmission.

  • How does the Ko-fi sponsorship / commission system work?

LBrowser is free and open-source, maintained by me. If you'd like to help guide development and prioritize features, you can sponsor "commissions" (feature requests or ideas) through Ko-fi. The community can contribute towards specific commissions, and the one with the highest total sponsorship will become a priority for implementation in an upcoming release, alongside general development and maintenance.
